The Jelly-Roll Rug Class: Coil, Sew, and Conquer!

Download class information here

Tired of boring bathmats? Ready to turn a bundle of fabric strips into a stunning, durable floor piece?

Join us for the original Jelly-Roll Rug class! This project is deceptively simple and wildly addictive. You’ll take one beautiful Jelly Roll (that pre-cut bundle of 2 1/2" fabric strips) and, using a clever technique, turn it into a thick, functional, and vibrant oval rug. It’s perfect for adding a splash of color to your kitchen, entryway, or sewing room!

What We'll Master in Class:

  • The Power of the Pre-Cut: Learn how to efficiently use a Jelly Roll—it's like instant gratification for quilters! We'll cover how to prepare your strips for maximum rug-making success.

  • Warp Speed Batting: Discover the essential trick of wrapping cotton batting inside your fabric strips. This is the secret ingredient that gives the rug its wonderful, firm texture and structure.

  • The Art of the Coil: We'll guide you step-by-step through the process of sewing the long, fabric-wrapped ropes into the iconic oval shape. This technique requires patience and practice, and we'll share all the best tips for keeping your stitches straight and your coil flat.

  • Machine Strength Training: Learn which needle and thread combinations work best for tackling multiple layers of fabric and batting. (Be prepared: you and your sewing machine will get a good workout!)

Who Is This Class For?

This class is great for Confident Beginners and Intermediate Sewists. While the sewing is repetitive and relaxing once you get the hang of it, handling the bulk and weight of the rug requires a bit of machine control. If you can sew a basic straight line and are ready for a fun challenge, you're ready for this class!

Come roll with us! You’ll walk away with a beautiful, custom rug and a huge feeling of accomplishment.

Jelly-Roll Rug: Essential Supplies

Please bring the following items to class. We recommend labeling anything you can, just in case!

The Basics & Fabric:

  1. The Pattern: The Original Jelly-Roll Rug Pattern by RJ Designs. (Must have this to attend!)

  2. Fabric: One (1) standard Jelly Roll (40 strips, 2 1/2" x width of fabric). If you are buying a used or partial roll, make sure you have at least 40 strips.

  3. Batting: 1 ¼ yards 100% Cotton 90- 96”  Wide or 50 yard package of Katahdin batting. Please Note: Do not use high-loft polyester or bonded batting.

Tools & Machine Essentials:

  1. A Walking Foot is highly recommended—it's your secret weapon for managing all that fabric bulk!

  2. Clover tube maker

  3. Thread: Two (2) large spools of good quality thread (matching or slightly contrasting to your Jelly Roll). Variegated thread is amazing.

  4. Ruler: A 6" x 24" acrylic ruler is helpful for trimming your strip ends.

  5.  Notebook and pencil/pen

****Class Prep:
Please note you will need to sew all your jelly rolls from end to end on the diagonal before coming to class.
You will also need to join all your batting if you are using batting yardage
